United States – On Monday, Vice President Kamala Harris is hosting Amir Peretz, who is a member of the Israeli wartime cabinet, and visiting Washington in a show of defiance from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Benny Gantz, a centrist Israeli who is against President Netanyahu, is talking with several Biden administration seniors, including Vice President Harris, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser. Under Biden’s administration, Joe Biden remains in Camp David, the presidential retreat, as reported by Associated Press.

Lack of Prime Minister’s Approval Sparks Discord

An official as a hard-right Likud party said that Gantz did not have a permit from the prime minister for such meetings in Washington, and the commander got the Cabinet official a strong talk – which reflects a widening split within Israel’s wartime leadership nearly six months into the Israel-Hamas war.

During her meeting with Gantz, Harris will make an array of demands, starting by insisting on a cease-fire that, if agreed to, will provide for the release of a number of categories of hostages held by Hamas. Needless to say, Israel has been gradually complying with the deal, except for a senior Biden official, and the White House has been stressing that it is utterly necessary for Hamas to accept this proposal as well.

“Given the immense scale of suffering in Gaza, there must be an immediate cease-fire for at least the next six weeks, which is what is currently on the table,” Harris said during an appearance in Selma, Alabama, on Sunday. “This will get the hostages out and get a significant amount of aid in.”

Harris continued: “This would allow us to build something more enduring to ensure Israel is secure and to respect the right of the Palestinian people to dignity, freedom and self-determination.”

In his part, Ghan will try to build tight bonds with the U.S., reinforce security in Israel, and make all efforts to free captives, according to the second Israeli government representative. The officials, who asked not to be identified because they are not supposed to go public with the discords within the Israeli government, have spoken up, as reported by Associated Press.

Humanitarian Concerns and Aid Efforts

This also happened when the U.S. airdropped aid into Gaza, and Israel organized a feeding convoy, resulting in dozens of Palestinians killed as they tried to break the fast. On Saturday, the first plane of 38,000 meals was dropped southwest of Gaza, and White House officials have assured their efforts to allow the use of sea routes besides the land convoys will continue in order to distribute more food.

Harris urged Israel to “do more to significantly increase the flow of aid” on Sunday in Selma.

“No excuses,” she said. “They must open new border crossings. They must not impose any unnecessary restrictions on the delivery of aid.”

Harris previously met Gantz at the Munich Security Conference in 2022.
